FINE ARTS COMMISSION
Meeting of July 12, 2012
Vice Chair Schroeter called the meeting to order at 7:06 p.m.
I. ROLL CALL
PRESENT: Regina Barall; Terrye Blackstone; Glynis McKenzie;
Maureen Rodgers; Betty Russell; Dan Russell; Florence Schroeter.
ABSENT: Karen Howe (excused); Hilde Mayranen-O’Brien (excused); Judy Okeson (excused);
Sue Tukey (excused); Prescille Yamamoto (excused).
II. MINUTES

To approve the minutes of June 14, 2012
Approved with one abstention (Florence Schroeter).
III. CHAIR’S REPORT
Vice Chair Schroeter noted that John Ryan resigned as a Commissioner per attached minutes. Terrye Blackstone accepted his resignation with regret.
IV. CORRESPONDENCE None.
V. COMMITTEE REPORTS
EHSYF – “Once on this Island” – July 2012
The performance will be held July 27, 28, and 29 at East Hartford Middle School. The matinee with be on Sunday, July 29. Glynis McKenzie invited all Commissioners to attend.
Maureen Rodgers reported that she saw that the Rocky Hill Theater is also doing “Once on this Island”.
Florence Schroeter reported that she saw that Windsor was also doing the show.
Dance
Regina Barall stated that she is planning 2 programs for the 2012-13 year. She will have a “Black History Month” celebration in February and a dance program in April.
Drama/Lecture/Poetry
Maureen Rodgers has scheduled Elizabeth Thomas to work with middle school students and Senior Citizens to write poetry. They will work together at EHMS in October. A final program for the public will be held at the EHCCC. Cost for this program will be $600.
Film Series
Terrye Blackstone highly regarded Glynis McKenzie for all of her work on the film series. Terrye felt that the Fine Arts Commission was the model for other towns to start a film series.
Art
Dan Russell will be contacting Laura White in August to compile a list of those teachers participating in the Art Exhibit in October. He will be producing a program to include title of work, medium used and sale price.
Terrye Blackstone stated that the Art League had a wonderful past season and the Art League will be taking a sabbatical in August. New programs will begin in October.
Children’s Programs
Regina Barall reported approximately 34 students signed up for the summer program at the library. The program will consist of poetry, voice, and dance. She brought some books that will be used with the children. A program will be held at the end of the session.
Music – Organ Recital St. John’s Church 9/9 @ 1:30 and Brass Quintet 9/9/12 @ 3:00
Betty Russell reported that the Quintet will perform in Alumni Park and if there is inclement weather the performance will be moved into the EHCCC. Flyers will be distributed at the final Summer Series program in August informing the public of both events on September 9.
Glynis McKenzie reported that the Organ Recital will begin at 1:30 to allow those in attendance to go to the program in Alumni Park at 3:00. Payment was made in June but due to scheduling conflicts and rehearsal the recital is being held in September.
Florence Schroeter reported that Paul Bisaccia will do a holiday performance at the end of November with David Giardina, cost will be $600 each for a total of $1200.
A performance is also scheduled in May 2013 with violinist Jason Myer (a former EH resident). Cost will be $650 each for a total of $1300.
VI. OLD BUSINESS None.
VII. NEW BUSINESS
Allocation of funding for scheduled programs 2012-13 year: Per the directive from Chair Howe, money will be allocated to those programs scheduled for the 2012-13 year. The following will be used as a guideline:

Summer Series $ 500
Regina Barall discussed having the library summer program in 2013. A report will be given at the end of the summer for the program held at the library this summer. If money is available at the end of the year, the Commission will review having the program in 2013.

IX. MEMBER’S CONCERNS
Terry Blackstone reported that the Art League “Blackstone Best in Show” is funded by the Blackstone family.
Dan Russell reported he attended the production of “Liberty” at the Warner Theatre. He stated it was a fascinating story.
Vice Chair Schroeter thanked the Commission for their understanding for her absence the past two months.
